Acronyms and Segments Analysed AbstractEPS Dominates the Steering Technology Market in Japan and Europe Frost & Sullivan’s comparative analysis of the three most developed markets in the world for advanced steering technologies - Japan, Europe and North America - reveals that the penetration of electric power steering (EPS) technology is particularly high in Japan. EPS penetration in Japan is expected to rapidly increase to attain a market share of over 60 per cent as early as 2007, while in Europe, it is likely to rise steadily with a market share of over 50 per cent by 2010. On the other hand, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in North America continue to opt for conventional hydraulic power steering (HPS) largely due to the prevailing preference for the traditional steering feel as well as cost constraints. This has restricted the uptake of EPS. In fact, Japan and Europe lead the way in the application of the latest and more sophisticated technologies such as EPS and active steering (AS) due to the fuel economy, integration and comfort benefits they offer in comparison to conventional HPS and electro HPS (EHPS). Suppliers with Complete Product Portfolios Stand to Gain Although North America trails in the uptake of EPS, vehicle manufacturers in the region are expected to gradually begin adopting this technology in the family and compact vehicle segments, with penetration expected to cross 25 and 30 per cent respectively by 2010. There is likely to be a particular focus on rack EPS (REPS) due to its ability to handle heavier front axle loads and the presence of higher power output of 42v. There is also expected to be a growing preference for AS by premium vehicle manufacturers that are currently on HPS. In Europe also, vehicle manufacturers that currently prefer HPS and EHPS for their D segment vehicles are likely to prefer REPS in the long term, with an expected penetration of nearly 10 per cent by 2010. "Thus, suppliers with complete product portfolios have a distinct advantage over their competitors as they can provide adequate solutions across all segments and also garner a higher market share," says the analyst of this research service. "The ability to cater to all segments is a distinct advantage because vehicle manufacturers have diverse steering requirements such as EPS for their lower segments and AS for the premium range."
