Abstract

The topic of this report is the Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology, its specifics, market aspects and applications. The report details one of the important UWB applications - Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), and provides specifics of this application, relevant standards and so on. Though the UWB WSN market is in its infancy - mostly due to regulatory barriers similar to all other UWB applications- we think it is necessary to stress the importance of these technologies symbiosis, and to show its perspectives.

Due to a number of very attractive features that we are discussing in this report, UWB allows to make their applications cost efficient and attractive to users. RFID, security, radar, emergency radio and others are among these applications. Not only UWB can widen a spectrum of applications in homeland security, it also adds an economy efficiency factor in the design of radar and communications devices. WSNs, which are spreading in the military and commercial sectors of our economy, and support detection, gathering and transmission of data from various sources and in various environments, gain many attractive features when using UWB as well. Inherent security, extremely low power consumption and ability to work in multipath conditions are just a few examples of WSNs with UWB. The FCC in our country and regulatory bodies around the world have a strict policy regarding UWB spectrum utilization (this is discussed in a report). As with other applications, which require the FCC approval on a case-by-case basis, growth of UWB application in WSNs depends on the regulatory bodies polices.
