List of Abbreviations AbstractThe European biodiesel market is defined by its total reliance on favourable fiscal legislation, which has led to large differences in market development between countries in Europe. New proposals from the European Commission look set to improve this situation, eventually leading to comparable market prospects throughout Europe. Low mineral oil prices combined with high raw material prices made market conditions particularly difficult for biodiesel producers from late 1997 through to early 1999. However, since then the biodiesel market has grown very rapidly. This was particularly pronounced in 2000 when very high mineral oil prices enabled biodiesel to be sold at a lower price than mineral diesel, fuelling significant demand, especially from captive fleets. Raw material price pressures will be a key restraint on the market in the future, so producers will need to ensure that securing these is a key part of their business plans. Farmers of oilseeds are already closely involved with many biodiesel companies and this will need to continue, as well as the full exploitation of alternative feedstocks such as waste oils and fats.
