Chapter 10
- Pharmaceutical Pricing and Reimbursement: Comparison of Pharmaceutical Prices (Europe), 2004
AbstractProportion of Pharmaceutical Spending in the Total Healthcare Expenditure Sees an Increase Despite most EU member states having publicly funded healthcare systems, private spending remains high in respect to the pharmaceutical sector. Pharmaceutical expenditure is largely private in countries such as Denmark and Belgium. The pharmaceutical expenditure has also been mostly private in Italy until recently. Moreover, due to cost-containment attempts, the proportion of public share in pharmaceutical expenditure is already decreasing in some of the other EU states. Nevertheless, the levels of the decline in the public proportion remains low in countries such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Portugal and Sweden, that are, on the contrary, witnessing an increase in the amount of public spending on pharmaceutical expenditure. Overall, the proportion of pharmaceutical spending in the total healthcare expenditure continues to increase throughout the region. This Frost & Sullivan research service is a strategic analysis of pricing and reimbursement issues for pharmaceutical products in Europe. It analyses the pharmaceutical pricing and reimbursement system for 23 European countries, providing a comprehensive understanding of the system in each country. Further, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis provided for each country is expected to enable multi-national pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to identify local strengths and weaknesses and better utilise the opportunities available in each country.
