About WetFeet

Abstract

This study presents the findings from online focus groups conducted by WetFeet in November 2004 with undergraduate, MBA, and young professional candidates concerning the online job search. However, the general principles for recruiting website design offered in this report draw from WetFeet’s long and rich research on the topic, including more than ten years spent reviewing hundreds of corporate recruiting sites, talking with thousands of candidates, and speaking with scores of corporate clients about their recruiting websites.

The report begins with a general description of how candidates use the Web and recruiting websites in the course of a job search. The discussion continues with a discussion of the “ideal” website, and an in-depth look at four key building blocks:
  • Navigation: how a candidate finds his or her way around the site;
  • Branding: the overall employment proposition conveyed by the site, drawn from elements including content, tone, images, graphic design, and colors;
  • Content: recruiting-centered information about issues such as jobs, culture, recruiting process, career paths, and so on; and
  • Functionality: the online application form and associated search and application tools.
Each section begins with a discussion of general principles of recruiting website design based upon the focus group findings and WetFeet’s experience. Following this are a series of “case study” examples selected from the ten real company websites we covered in this study:
  • Bain & Co., www.bain.com
  • Banc of America Securities, www.bofasecurities.com
  • The Boston Consulting Group, www.bcg.com
  • Deutsche Bank, www.db.com
  • Ernst & Young, www.ey.com
  • Kimberly-Clark, www.kimberly-clark.com
  • Merrill Lynch, www.ml.com
  • Procter & Gamble, www.pg.com
  • Thomson, www.thomson.com
  • UBS, www.ubs.com
