AbstractThis report provides market statistics on the number of firms, establishments, and employees in the middle market by both the size of business and vertical industry perspectives. The research also provides data on the primary work environments of employees in this market, including the number of telecommuters, Internet-accessing telecommuters, and remote branch offices. Detailed five-year forecasts are included for all mid-sized business demographics, as well as a discussion of current market trends.
Middle market firms are characterized by being highly "fragmented," with each business supporting as many as 10 small remote sites, and relatively conservative with regard to the use of technology. Across industries, businesses in this segment have become increasingly fragmented over the last decade, particularly in the last five years, where advances in technology, namely the Internet, have facilitated their changing organizational structures.
In-Stat/MDR estimates that there will be roughly 87K firms in the middle market by the end of 2002, employing nearly 22 million workers. These firms are expected to support nearly 500K Remote Branch Offices (RBOs) and roughly 5 million telecommuters at that time, roughly 6 RBOs and 52 telecommuters per firm.
