Abstract

This report provides detailed forecasts and statistics about the growing telecommuter workforce among U.S. businesses. The research provides a break down of the telecommuter demographics, Internet access technologies, and network use by size of business.

The growing popularity of working from home has certainly been brought about by changes in work attitudes and, more importantly, advancements in basic technologies. U.S. employees have more freedom than ever to set up a home office, with roughly 14% of the U.S. workforce estimated to have telecommuted at least 3 days per week in 2000. In-Stat estimates there were nearly 30 million U.S. employees that worked from home as part of a primary or secondary job in 2000, with roughly 7 million being full-time telecommuters. Of more interest, roughly 19 million telecommuters in the U.S. had access to the Internet from their home office.
