    Abstract

The promise of many benefits of 802.15.4 and ZigBee standardization still hold true, even in the face of competition from Zensys' Z-Wave Alliance with its available proprietary silicon.

2005 is an emerging year for 802.15.4 silicon, with a few end products just barely beginning to appear. Silicon developments for System-on-Chip (SoC) and System-in-Package (SiP) solutions that include a microcontroller have been moving at a quick pace, with several vendors expecting to begin sampling such solutions this year. These solutions will drive easier system and product development, and lower the costs of 802.15.4 sensor networks.

Using an aggressive scenario, the CAGR (for the years 2005 thru 2009) for the 802.15.4 chipset is 200%, with chipset shipments surpassing 150 million units in 2009. With a finalized 1.0 ZigBee specification, a major milestone has been accomplished. In addition, the first ZigBee-compliant platform certificates awarded to Chipcon, CompXs, Ember, and Freescale Semiconductor will help push end product development forward to realize market movement.

Included in the report is an overview of the technology and markets, as well as selected players in the market, 802.15.4 forecasts for 2004-2009 by application, frequency band, geographic region, and aggressive and conservative scenarios of chipsets (units, revenue and ASP).
