    Abstract

IEEE 1394 (1394), also called FireWire or i.Link, is a high speed serial bus specification found in four primary markets: PCs, PC peripherals, Consumer Electronics (CE) and Automotive.

It has been an eventful year for 1394. In the PC space, 1394a has been integrated into core logic chipsets produced by both Silicon Integrated Systems and NVIDIA. In addition, the first PCs with the new high-speed 1394b standard were released by Apple in early 2003. This should lead to 1394b-enabled PC peripheral devices, such as external hard drives and DVD drives, coming to market by the end of 2003.

In the consumer electronics market, there were two announcements in the past year that should have a major impact on the penetration of 1394 in this market. In August 2002, the FCC declared that, by July 2007, all TV sets with screen sizes of 13-inches and above must have built-in high definition digital tuners, which will benefit 1394. In addition, the NCTA and the CEA agreed to mandate 1394 as one of the two digital interfaces between cable set top boxes and digital televisions.
