AbstractAsynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) equipment sales grew a healthy 9 percent overall in Q499, rebounding from a slight (2 percent) decline during the previous quarter and finally breaking the $1 billion mark. Demonstrating the preferred status of ATM for WAN deployments, sales of ATM WAN switches increased 12 percent to $818 million. Although Gigabit Ethernet is squeezing ATM out of the LAN and ATM NIC sales are essentially red-lining, the outlook for ATM WAN switch sales is strong. ATM is widely deployed in the backbones of LAN and WAN infrastructures and is still the obvious choice for interconnecting private and public networks. In 2000, Cahners In-Stat Group expects ATM WAN switch sales to grow more than 50 percent over 1999 sales of $2.8 billion.
