Abstract

The idea of offering competitive residential telephone services has interested cable TV operators for years. Although reliable telephony equipment for hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) networks is commercially available, economic and operational barriers have limited its availability.

This report examines telephony services over hybrid fiber-coaxial networks. It covers the issues surrounding the introduction of cable telephony service. These issues include the development of standards, the different technologies available, cable infrastructure and hardware, and telephony service challenges. In addition, it profiles cable telephony equipment vendors and cable MSOs in order to highlight their products and services.

The report provides forecasts for worldwide cable telephony subscribers, and the worldwide total installed cable telephony lines through the year 2004. It also forecasts cable telephony revenues for the next five years.
