Abstract

The Universal Serial Bus (USB) saw continued success in 2003. The primary story in USB has been the transition to high speed USB, which offers a 40x speed improvement over full speed USB. In 2003 the PC market has continued to adopt high speed USB, with notebooks following high speed USB's earlier success in desktops.

In the PC peripheral market, high speed USB is in an increasing number of devices, particularly external drives, scanners and printers. In consumer electronics, applications such as digital still cameras and digital camcorders are seeing increased penetration of high speed USB.

USB On-The-Go (OTG), optimized for data transmission between portable devices, is gaining design wins in some PC peripheral and consumer electronic applications. In significant recent developments, a new wireless USB standard was introduced at the Intel Developer's Forum in February 2004. Based on Ultra Wide Band, a Wireless USB 1.0 specification should be released before the end of 2004 that allows for speeds of up to 480 Mbps.

This report contains five-year forecasts for Low/Full Speed USB, High Speed USB, and USB OTG. Penetration of each type of USB into 35 separate applications is provided. Responses on USB from In-Stat/MDR's annual Residential Technology Survey are included in the report. Brief profiles of major USB silicon and IP suppliers are also provided.
