AbstractThis report provides market statistics on the number of firms, establishments, and employees in the small business market by both the size of business and vertical industry perspectives. The research also provides data on the primary work environments of employees in this market, including the number of telecommuters, internet-accessing telecommuters, remote branch offices and employees. Detailed five-year forecasts are included for all small business demographics, as well as a discussion of current market trends. Small businesses and organizations have been among the most adversely affected in the recent economic downturn, experiencing significant declines in both the number of firms and employees in 2001. However, with a recovery seemingly under way, however slowly, the number of small business market firms and employees is expected to grow in the current year.
In-Stat/MDR estimates there will be roughly 2.3 million small businesses and organizations in operation by year's end, up from 2.2 million in 2001. Employment suffered much less than the number of firms. In-Stat/MDR estimates that businesses and organizations with 5 to 99 employees will provide jobs to nearly 38 million workers this year. By 2006, the number of firms and organizations is expected to rise to 2.7 million, and the market is projected to employ roughly 42 million workers.
