Abstract

For many, the use of biometrics as a means of security remains something of a novelty; a technology for only the most extreme cases of access control. Utilizing the unique characteristics of one's eye or face to gain entrance to buildings or information is that of science fiction. Or is it? With the advent of the computer age and the explosion in electronic documentation, that scenario is starting to change. As a result, over the next few years, the use of biometrics will continue to grow and become much more commonplace. This report takes a look at four key biometrics technologies (eye, face, hand and finger scan) including how they work, who's using them, and why. Forecasts of the technologies and markets are provided through 2005, as well as brief profiles of some of the major players.
