Abstract

Thirty RFID Logistics Case Studies

Since its invention sixty years ago, there have been many thousands trials and rollouts of RFID around the world. The most popular format has been contactless smart cards and tickets followed by smart labels then other shapes. Passive versions i.e. without batteries have been most popular but active tags have been responsible for about 15% of tags sold and a rather higher percentage of the money spent on RFID systems including tags.

Logistics has been a popular application
Logistics has been one of the main applications of RFID, behind transport of people and secure access, but there are inevitably overlaps of definition here. Logistics employs all the formats mentioned above as well as active and passive versions. However, active tags are relatively more important than passive in the logistics arena compared to others.

World's largest database of RFID in action
IDTechEx has by far the largest database of examples of RFID in action. It is called the RFID Knowledgebase and currently numbers well over 1,100 case studies and covering the activities of more than 1,300 users and suppliers. Lessons of success and failure are analysed and there is much technical and economic detail including paybacks where available.
