AbstractWhile the news on genome science was scarce two years ago, the frequency of articles rapidly increased recently. Both scientists and the Japanese biotech industry were very active during this period. Not only did Japan witness the growth of several traditionally chemical and drug pharmaceutical companies towards biotech research, but also the involvement of some engineering and software companies in this field, mainly in the development of sequencing machines, biochip devices and software and in the bioinformatics sector. More surprisingly, an increase in the involvement of the academic sectors in IP protection and in the biotech business is observed. Furthermore, several Japanese bioventure companies were recently created.Since the IP aspect in integral to be successful development of research and biotech market, the authors attempted to assess the IP situation of some of the most recent and innovative methodologies and tools in the field of Japanese Biotechnology. The authors hope that this publication may be useful in giving a broader perspective of the current situation of Japanese innovative biotechnologies, and that it may aid international entities involved in biotech research, development and business to foster collaborative efforts with Japanese biotech companies and institutions in the areas such as licensing and technology transfer.
