Abstract

The aging of the population and continued advances in biotechnology drive the skin ulcer portion of the wound care industry, estimated at $3.3 billion globally. A lack of effective treatment options has heretofore added to the increased costs of skin ulcer treatment and has contributed to the growing frustration in the industry. New product manufacturers can capitalize on these concerns by offering products designed to improve healing rates and prevent wound formation within a cost-conscious framework.

Besides the always-improving synthetic dressing materials, newer technologies in wound treatment include the xenogeneic tissue scaffold, bilayered human dermal substitutes, recombinant growth factors, endoscopic subfascial ligation of venous perforators, and endovascular arterial repair techniques. The use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy and electrical stimulation remain controversial, but opportunities for improved cost-effective outcomes are all welcome at this point.

New wound care products and devices are entering the market with lightening speed, all striving for the best clinical outcomes. Disease management programs that emphasize prevention and early intervention are resulting in the rapid adoption of new wound care products and devices, provided they have proven outcomes. This rapid uptake of new technology makes the chronic wound care market one of the best opportunities in medical device and biotechnology.

This study, the first volume in a complete re-examination of the wound care market, analyzes the market using the following product segments and subsegments:

  • Anti-Infectives
    • Systemic
    • Topical
  • Skin Ulcer Management
    • Compression Dressings and Bandages
    • Wound Cleaners
    • Debridement
  • Moist Dressings
    • Alginates
    • Films
    • Foams
    • Hydrocolloids
    • Hydrogels
  • Biological Dressings
    • Artificial Skin
    • Collagen
    • Growth Factors
    • Others
  • Pressure Relief
  • Miscellaneous Treatments

The report details product offerings, research developments, industry trends, and relevant epidemiologic and demographic data. Market size, market growth, and market forecasts are provided for each segment and subsegment. Competitive market share information is provided by leading manufacturer for each segment in the year 2004.

The information and analysis presented in this report are based on an extensive survey of senior management in the wound care industry, specifically involved in treating skin ulcers. Background information was obtained from a comprehensive search of published literature and reports obtained from various government, business, medical trade, and international journals and company reports and releases. Key information from published literature was used to conduct interviews with over 30 industry executives and product managers to validate and obtain expert opinion on current and future trends in the wound care industry. Interviews were also used to confirm and/or adjust market size and market share estimates, as well as in formulating market projections.
