The concept of competencies and competency management has been around for a long time. Competencies have been referred to by different names over the years, with terms such as KSAOC coming into favor in the 1990s and still being used in some circles, notably the public sector. KSAOC stands for knowledge, skills, ability, and other characteristics, which is a good approximation of the concept. But, regardless of the name, competencies essentially represent the unique requirements for achieving success in a particular organization or position.
