AbstractIntroductionThe study identifies trends in the amount of time spent online by kids, the amount of time kids expect to spend online in the near future, kids’ opinions about the future role of the Internet in society, and parents’ role in kids’ online activities. The study also identifies kids’ attitudes toward the future of e-commerce, kids’ ownership of portable Internet access devices, such as mobile/cell phones, PDAs, ultra light laptops, pagers and hand held PCs, and kids’ opinions of the future uses of portable Internet access devices. The “Future of the Internet According to Kids 2004” study was jointly conducted by SpectraCom Inc. and Circle 1 Network. The survey was conducted with members of the Circle 1 Network’s KidsCom Club® Youth Panel, comprised of boys and girls age eight to 14 from across the US.
Report Highlights Broadband use increased 21% from last year. Kids with broadband connections to the Internet at home spend more time online than kids with dial-up service do. Three-quarters (74%) of the kids with broadband connections report spending five or more hours per week online. If the past is a barometer, kids’ Internet usage will continue to increase. Over 40% of 8-10 year olds stated they’ve increased their Internet usage from last year and 74% of all 8-10 year olds expect to spend more time online in five years than they do now.
