Pulmonary Drug Delivery Poised to Ride the Coattails of Blockbuster Drugs

New York, December 6, 2001 /PR Newswire — Pulmonary drug delivery, once the province of respiratory drugs only, is nearing a major leap forward in the marketplace, thanks to new systemic formulations that will allow the delivery of such huge-market drugs as inhalable insulin and intranasal Viagra. According to a new study from Kalorama Information, the worldwide market for pulmonary drug delivery products will grow at nearly 25% for the next 5 years and the ease of administration of difficult molecules is a big part of the reason.

The new study, The Market for Pulmonary Drug Delivery Systems, available at MarketResearch.com, reveals that the total market for inhaled and intranasal drugs will exceed $36 billion in sales by 2005—almost triple the current market. Furthermore, the technologies involved may find broad application in formulations of new large-molecule biopharmaceuticals that are still very early in the development process. Pain management, contraception, and even immunization are all clinical areas for which pulmonary delivery may be well suited.

“The list of possible applications is getting larger all the time,” notes Steven Heffner, Acquisitions Editor for Kalorama. “Once dosing reproducibility is no longer an issue, any drug that can benefit from rapid onset of action and that doesn’t cause pulmonary irritation is a good candidate for pulmonary drug delivery.”

The report is the third volume of a large, ongoing market study of drug delivery technologies from Kalorama Information. Drug Delivery Volume 3: The Market for Pulmonary Drug Delivery Systems, examines the market for intranasal delivery technologies and inhalation technologies, such as metered dose inhalers, dry powder, liquid and nebulizer formulations.
