• Exxon Mobil in 2009 said it would unfreeze new phases of Sakhalin-1 after Russia cleared its spending plan, giving the US oil major a respite in a long-running battle over the project's future. Russia had long denied approval for spending on Sakhalin-1, a production sharing deal (PSA) which is subject to special regulations, including a fixed long-term tax status.
• Russia plans to invest over $20.0 billion in managing its water resources and infrastructure upgrades. With over 20.0 percent of the world's fresh water, Russia is second only to Brazil in global fresh water resources.
• Russia's oil wealth funds declined by $2.6 billion in November 2009, falling to $167.96 billion, as more funds have been transferred to aid federal budget shortages.
• In 2008, US based biotechnology company Antigenics Inc said it had won approval to market its kidney cancer vaccine, Oncophage, in Russia. The product was approved despite failing to win approval in the United States. It is the first time the Russian government has approved a drug that was not first cleared in its country of origin. Oncophage is designed to reprogram a patient's immune system to target cancer cells from a specific tumour.
