A flavour of major economic opportunities and risks highlighted in the PhaseZero Poland report:
  • Poland moved to ramp up its stalled privatisation programme and boost depleted state coffers by an estimated $12.2 billion through 2010. The treasury ministry said in 2009 it expected two-thirds of the proceeds in2010, in large part from the sale of power groups Enea, Tauron, PGE and PAK. It also wants to sell several chemicals companies.
  • In 2009, Poland received a record-high loan of $2.7 billion from the EIB for road construction for use until 2013. This is the largest investment loan that Poland has received from the EIB. The money is enough to resurface 4,000 - 5,000 kilometres of roadways in the country.
  • In July 2009, Poland increased its sale of dollar bonds by 25.0 percent to $2.0 billion after investors placed orders for four times that amount, helping the economy to plug its growing budget deficit. Poland needed funds as it faced a 48.0 percent deeper budget shortfall than the government had planned.
  • Over 300,000 people come to Poland every year to take advantage of elective medical procedures at lower prices than in Western Europe. According to estimates from the Polish Association of Medical Tourism, between 300,000 and 330,000 people visit Poland annually and spend an average of $1,500 on elective medical and dental procedures.
