A flavour of major economic opportunities and risks highlighted in the PhaseZero China report:
  • China's government has opened a new range of government-run industries to the private sector, either through investment in existing companies or establishment of new firms. The government also announced Thursday that it would improve financing services and simplify administrative procedures for private sector involvement in those industries.
  • China National Nuclear Corp. set up a venture with local partners in Fujian province to build fourth-generation reactors. China is developing nuclear energy to help cut reliance on more polluting coal and oil and to meet surging electricity demand.
  • China's offshore direct investment more than doubled to a record $56.0 billion in 2008. Its companies now own international assets worth $184.0 billion and the country's leaders are keen to acquire more in 2010. State-owned enterprises accounted for 85.4 percent of the total, compared with 0.3 percent by private enterprises, China's commerce ministry said. It did not account for the rest.
  • In November 2009, Swiss pharmaceutical giant, Norvatis, announced plans to invest $1.25 billion in two Chinese Research & Development (R&D) centres over five years. Novartis will put $250.0 million into a new R&D centre and manufacturing facility in Changshu, a city near Shanghai, and another $1.0 billion to add 1,000 researchers at an existing centre in Shanghai. This is an effort to tap into one of the fastest growing healthcare markets.
