5.3 Byetta/Exenatide LAR: Non-Insulin Revolutionary Injectable
Eli Lilly/Amylin's GLP-1 agonist anti-diabetic drug Byetta (exenatide) is available for subcutaneous injection as a solution in a glass cartridge that has been assembled in a pen-injector format. Byetta pre-filled pen is available as either 5ìg or 10ìg exenatide per dose. Byetta enjoyed marked success in 2007, where its sales grew by 51% over the previous year, reaching a total of $0.650bn. For the year extending through the second quarter of 2008, Byetta generated sales of $0.669bn, with a growth of 30%. It has continued to enjoy high growth and generated sales revenues of $0.797 billion for the whole of 2009, which was a growth of 6% from the previous year. In 2010, the worldwide sales of Byetta reached $0.710bn and visiongain predicts sales to reach $1.00bn by 2015 and $1.28 billion by 2021 (Tables 5.14-5.15 and Figure 5.7). With the withdrawal of rosiglitazone from EU markets, Byetta will perform well until pipeline drugs enter the market, improving diabetes treatment. Sales will rise with the entry of Byetta/Exenatide LAR to the market.
