4.7 Australasian Commercial Aircraft Leasing Market

The Australasian aviation industry is characterised by the evolution of established airline business models. Airlines such as Qantas have had to adapt due to the affect of low-cost carriers and evolve their business model. An example of this is the expansion of JetStar, a subsidiary, and further progression into the South-East Asian market.

Air transport is crucial in a region which relies heavily on tourism and international trade to propel the economy. Air traffic was affected following the economic downturn of 2009; however growth is forecast to average roughly 6% in the region over the next decade.

As Visiongain’s market forecast suggests, the commercial aircraft leasing market in the Australasian region has less penetration than in Asia Pacific or Europe, reflecting similar growth rates, albeit a significantly smaller fleet, as the North American market for leased commercial aircraft.

Future opportunities for growth and expansion lie in the emergence of LCC routes, particularly to South East Asia, and increased capacity and routes between the region and the Middle East.

The Australasian commercial aircraft leasing market is forecast by Visiongain to record the slowest growth rate at just 2.6% during 2011-2021. In 2011, the Australasian commercial aircraft portfolio included 167 aircraft, this figure will rise to 217 aircraft in 2021.

Visiongain forecast the Australasian commercial aircraft leasing market to be worth $5.7bn in 2011. By 2021, the Australasian commercial aircraft leasing market is forecast by Visiongain to reach a value of $8.4bn, recording a 4.1% CAGR during 2011-2021. Table 4.29 and Figure 4.18 show the Visiongain forecast for the Australasian commercial aircraft leasing market 2011-2021. Table 4.30 details the CAGR for 2011-2021, 2011-2016 and 2016-2021.
