4.5 Central Nervous System Diseases Market 2012-2022
Central nervous system (CNS) disorders are currently a minor part of the market compared with the four therapeutic classes surveyed above. China spends less than many other emerging markets in Asia, including India and South Korea, on treatments for these disorders. However, the CNS market is likely to increase in importance, in line with its key position in Western markets, as China’s disease burden comes to resemble that of the other major industrialized countries. In particular, these nations face a growing burden of neurodegenerative disease, which is one of the major R&D foci for the industry. China’s ageing population (180 million of the population will be over 65 years of age by 2020) means it will face the same challenges as the US, Europe and Japan in this area. As a result, CNS products are expected to become more relevant to the Chinese market. Several Western CNS products have been launched over the past few years, with much attention given to Keppra (levetiracetam), an epilepsy treatment launched in 2007, Champix (varenicline), a smoking cessation treatment launched in 2008, and Invega (paliperidone), a schizophrenia treatment launched in 2009.
