Following the unprecedented decline in retail spend in 2009, there is a return to growth, but this is restrained and the average annual growth rate over 2009-2014 will only be 2.4%. Taking into account that this includes the return of inflation this makes it a challenging outlook for retailers with very little growth in volume.

Online spending will grow at nearly five times the rate of overall retail spending - averaging 11.9% and increasing by £15.0bn. Meanwhile retail space will decline by 11.3 million sq ft. The removal of underperforming space will see retail sales densities in specialists improve by 12.0%.

Non-food is set to grow by £13.5bn, far less than food, and performance will vary by sector. Clothing & footwear and health & beauty will outperform, but home-related markets will be held back by a stagnant housing market and consumers not wanting to spend on big ticket items.
