| Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is a Gram-positive organism commonly found in the throat and skin. Although colonization with GAS is mostly harmless, the bacteria can cause a wide spectrum of diseases and inflammatory sequelae. GAS infections range from mild superficial infections such as pharyngitis “strep throat” to severe invasive life-threatening diseases such as necrotizing fasciitis (NF) or “flesh eating disease”.
