During 2007-2008 the Belarusian economy demonstrated high rates of economic growth. Nominal GDP in 2007 reached $44.7 bln. and grew by 8.2% in real terms compared to 2006.
Belarusian milk and dairy products market is a growing, non-mature and highly fragmented market. Market is closely regulated by the government in terms of sanitary and public health standards, as well as pricing.
Since the USSR, Belarus inherited a huge milk production and processing capacities.
The Republic of Belarus is a fully self-sufficient country in terms of milk and milk products production.
Today, Belarusian milk and dairy products production potential is highly required on the Russian market, which has been constantly experiencing deficit of its own milk; hence Russia is a net importer of milk and milk products.
Exports supplies of dairy products into the Russian Federation amounts to about 90% of the total Belarusian dairy exports.
