Servers & Mainframes: market research reports

Computer servers are physical or virtual machines used to serve the requests of other programs, or clients, which may or may not run on the same computer. Servers are also software and hardware systems that run dedicated services such as databases, file systems, mail services, or printers. Servers link other computers together across a network. Almost any computer is capable of acting as a network server.

However, dedicated servers have features making it more appropriate for production environments. Servers are designed to run for extended periods of time without interruption. Servers are expected to be highly available, reliable, and durable. These features include a faster CPU, increased high-performance RAM, and one or more large hard drive. Other distinctions can include redundancy in power supplies and network connections.

Mainframes are a type of computer typically used for large processing jobs. Mainframes were originally named for the large casing that housed the central processing unit (CPU) of the computer. Mainframes are designed to process a very high volume of input and output (I/O) and put emphasis on throughput computing. Current mainframe design includes multiple subsidiary computers that help the mainframe manage the I/O devices. This leaves the CPU free to utilize its high-speed memory. Now, mainframes are known as powerful commercial machines most often used for processing census data, consumer statistics, and financial transactions.
