The Netherlands currently has just one nuclear reactor that accounts for only 4% of its overall electricity needs. Last year about 103 billion kWh gross was generated. Natural gas provided 60 billion kWh (TWh), and coal 28 TWh. Renewable resources (mostly biomass) added 8.7 TWh. Another 21.5 TWh net of electricity is imported, mostly from Germany, and since some of that is nuclear-generated, official statistics put the nuclear share at 9-10%.

In 2009, German utility RWE agreed to buy Essent for EUR 8.35 billion and then announced that it was prepared to build new nuclear capacity in Netherlands. At that time Essent owned half of EPZ. However, due to a statute regarding the plant’s ownership, the Essent takeover excluded the 50% stake in Borssele, so this was placed into a new company - Energy Resources Holding (ERH) - owned by the provincial and municipal authorities comprising Essent's original shareholders. The price paid by RWE dropped by EUR 950 million accordingly.

Beyond reducing its renewable energy funding, the country's morphing energy policy looks as though it will include more nuclear power in the future. Currently, home to one nuclear power plant, the government has recently eliminated its opposition to nuclear energy, and given its approval for the first new nuclear power plant in almost 40 years.

Uranium enrichment is the most important fuel cycle activity in Netherlands. Urenco Nederland BV increased its capacity to 3 800 tSW/y last year. A licence application for extension up to 4 950 tSW/y is in preparation. The share of the Urenco-group in the Western world is nearly 20%. Urenco has concluded contracts with 17 countries, including many European Union countries, Switzerland, Brazil, South Africa, the United States, as well as in the Far East (Korea, Chinese Taipei and Japan). In addition, Urenco is the world’s largest supplier of depleted Zinc-64, which is used for dose rate reduction of nuclear power stations and also against stress corrosion. Urenco Nederland is supplying other stable isotopes to the market as well like cadmium, molybdenum, iridium, selenium, tungsten and many more.

In this industry scenario, Taiyou Research analyzes the Nuclear Power Market in Netherlands.

Divided into five chapters, this in-depth research offering from Taiyou Research is a complete analysis of the nuclear power market in Netherlands.

The report deals with an overview of the global power market which is consistently rising due to rapid industrialization resulting in ever increasing demand for power. 66% of global power market is dominated by thermal power sources viz. coal and petroleum but stringent emission norms and depletion of sources is driving global attention towards renewable technology and nuclear power with a 7.5% market share is going to play a major role in future.

In spite of the Chernobyl disaster and the more recent Fukushima setback, the global installed nuclear capacity is likely to increase at a CAGR of nearly 4% and nuclear generation at a CAGR of 3.9% during 2011-2020. In comparison to other technologies the nuclear power has a nominal impact on greenhouse gas emission.
