Data center services market primarily comprises of providers of dedicated hosting services and the companies providing shared hosting as a component of larger telecommunications, internet access, or online business solutions package. This industry is also referred to as the internet infrastructure services industry or web hosting services or colocation marketplace. In our analysis, we have segmented this market into four categories - shared, basic dedicated, complex managed and colocation services. Companies in the industry mainly comprise of leading telecom providers, information and technology majors and communications giants.

Data center services market in United States is estimated to have reached US$28.2 billion by the end of 2009. The market continued to grow at a CAGR of 25% since 2000, even as mergers, acquisitions and new service delivery models evolved and reshaped the supply-side landscape. United States provides the most lucrative market opportunities for U.S.-based service providers, but international sales generate a significant portion of revenues. This growth is driven primarily by increased popularity of video on demand, on-line gaming, e-commerce, social networking and VOIP communication. In terms of segments, over the years, there has been a decline in the overall share of the complex managed services while there has been a marginal growth in the market share of shared and colocation service. But still, complex managed services is the largest data center service market segment and the other three segments have an almost equal market share.

Over the next four years, data center services market in United States is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12.36% to reach US$45 billion, primarily due to the rising internet traffic with greater bandwidth penetration, growth in social media and web 2.0 and the overall maturity of the online business models. Complex managed services will continue to have almost half of the market share, however, shared services are expected to grow fastest in terms of CAGR (14.2%) followed by basic dedicated (12.7%), complex managed (11.9%) and colocation (11.8%). The expansion of small business website penetration will be sufficient to overcome continued downward pricing pressure on standalone shared and basic dedicated services, resulting in steady growth. Growth in the complex managed and colocation services will be fuelled by increased website penetration among SMBs and an expanded range of service offerings including enterprise networking, business continuity/disaster recovery, utility computing and software as a service (SaaS).
