SVN has reported on forty-five North American companies that manufacture bodies for cutaway, curtainside, dry freight, and refrigerated vans, as well as step-vans, providing unit and value production estimates by segment. While these companies may also manufacture trailers, this analysis only considers van bodies mounted on truck chassis.

Dry freight vans account for the majority of unit production. Most companies manufacture more than one type of body, with very few companies focusing predominantly on a single product line.

Market-wise, the economic conditions in 2008 and 2009 severely affected van body production. Unit production in 2009 was down an estimated 59% over 2006. However, the van body industry came back strongly in 2010, with production up an estimated 23% over 2009. The strong rebound of the market in 2010 was largely driven by replacement necessitated by an ageing fleet.

The competitive evaluation shows that the top five van body manufacturers hold nearly 60% of the unit market share; Morgan Corporation holds the leadership position. A major competitive factor in the industry is the geographic proximity of a company’s manufacturing facilities to its customer base.

Cargo vans powered by alternative fuels have generated considerable interest in recent years, but are still in the initial stages of market penetration. Van body manufacturers are entering into collaborations with fleet customers to manufacture hybrid and all-electric dry freight and refrigerated units. It is expected that such vans will increasingly replace the ageing fleet of diesel-powered vans.

This is the only report of its kind on this subject, prepared by a publishing/ consulting firm whose principals have 25+ years of industry knowledge and experience.
