The Fire Apparatus Manufacturing Industry in North AmericaSpecialtyVehicles.netDecember 15, 2010 83 Pages - SKU: SPVH6046716 |
| Countries covered: North America Post 9/11, the fire apparatus manufacturing industry received a major boost in demand as the Department of Homeland Security provided grants to fire departments to upgrade their equipment. 2006 was a very good year for the industry, with the additional advantage of significant pre-buy activity ahead of the implementation of EPA 2007 emission standards. Leading players continued to display strong growth and good revenue numbers after 2006, but the industry began to feel the pressures of the recession during 2008. Fire apparatus purchases are typically funded from municipal tax receipts, and fire departments began to experience a budget squeeze when tax receipts declined as a result of decreased levels of economic activity. Two leading manufacturers have gone through turbulent times through most of the past two years, and a number of small manufacturers have withdrawn from this segment. Currently, innovation in fire truck design is driven by the need to carry a greater number of rescue tools. Fire apparatus is increasingly required to respond to EMS calls where a rescue operation has to be performed, and while the pump on the fire engine is not engaged, it must, however, retain fire suppression capabilities. Additionally, most leading manufacturers now offer a predesigned “value for money” fire truck featuring fewer options. These models have been designed for the fire department on a tight budget. Power requirements on a fire truck are high, and therefore alternative fuel-powered engines have not yet made significant inroads into this application. Green initiatives in the form of power-saving options are, however, being introduced. |
