In the first quarter of 2009 Russia's GDP fell by 9.5% on the year as a result of the global economic turndown. The country's GDP is expected to contract by 5.0% in 2009 due to lower commodity prices, restricted access to external financing and reduced external demand. In 2010 a recovery to 2.0% growth is expected.

According to the global report of real estate company Jones Lang LaSalle on real estate transparency for 2008, Russia recorded one of the biggest improvements in the index for Real Estate transparency. However, Russian property transactions are still regarded as semi-transparent. Countries are ranked from Tier 1 - Highly Transparent to Tier 5 - Opaque. If the tendency continues, the country has the chances to enter the next tier in the index.
