| Countries covered: Kosovo The existing pipeline of the Republic of Kosovo, with an annual transport capacity of 200 million cu m, has been out of use since 1986 and today much of it is either braced by corrosion or destroyed altogether. Kosovo has no natural gas reserves, the development of the gas infrastructure has stalled, which hinders the establishment of a natural gas market. Logically, there is no underground gas storage in the country. The introduction of natural gas in Kosovo is expected to cost EUR 647 mln. The national energy strategy envisages development of Kosovo’s gas system by its connection with the gas networks of its neighbours. The alternative routes for the delivery of natural gas to Kosovo are from Macedonia, from Serbia or from a connection to the Ionian-Adriatic Pipeline (IAP), Nabucco or South Stream. Kosovo does not produce natural gas, except as an associated product from lignite mining at Kosovo A thermal power plant. Yet the quantities are highly insufficient and cannot meet the domestic demand. Kosovo’s gas consumption is forecast at 300 million cu m by 2015, which presupposes the existence of a functioning gas infrastructure by the time. |
