Panama

The southernmost country in Central America, Panama is divided into 11 provinces and one territory and it claimed independence from Colombia in November 3, 1903.

The capital is Panama City. The U.S. dollar is the currency of Panama. The Terrain is mountainous, 3,475 is its highest elevation. Panama’s population reached over 3 million people. The majority of the population (70%) is mestizo (mixed African, Amerindian, and European).

The official language spoken in Panama is Spanish although English and indigenous languages are also spoken.

The Panama Canal, a 77 kilometer ship canal that joins the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, was built by the U.S. in 1904. At the end of the century, the canal was transfer from the U.S. to Panama. Revenues from the tolls represent a large number of Panama’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

El 70% de sus habitantes son mestizos (cruza de Africanos, Indios Americanos, y Europeos). La lengua oficial es el español aunque también se habla inglés y algunas lenguas indíginas.

El canal de Panamá, un canal artificial para grandes embarcaciones, se extiende por 77 km y une los acéanos Atlántico y Pacifico. Fue contruido por los EEUU en 1904. A fines del siglo, el canal fué transferido de los EEUU a Panamá. Los ingresos por transpaso representan una buena parte del producto interno bruto (PIB) de Panamá.
