El Salvador

El Salvador is not only the smallest but also the most densely populated Central American country. Its area is 8,124 sq miles and its estimated population is over 6 million people. El Salvador is a Republic, with one legislative house, the Legislative Assembly.

In pre-Columbian times, the territory was inhabited by various aborigines including the Pipil and the Mayans. By 1520 the indigenous population was reduced by 50% due to the smallpox epidemic brought by the Spanish.

In the early 16th century the Spanish sought to reclaim control over the territory and they called the land "Provincia De Nuestro Señor Jesus Cristo, El Salvador Del Mundo," later shortened to El Salvador.

El Salvador is crossed by two volcanic mountain ranges. The climate is hot and wet in the lowlands and cooler and wetter in higher altitudes. The rainy season extends from May to October.

El Salvador es el país mas pequeño de América Central pero tambien es el mas densamente poblado. Su área es de 8.124 millones cuadrados y su población se estima en 6 millones. El Salvador es una Republica con un poder legislativo: la Asamblea Legislativa.

En épocas precolombianas, el territorio estaba ocupado por varias tribus aborígenes como los Pipil y los Mayas. En 1520 la población aborígen se redusco en un 50% debido a la epidemia de viruela traída por los Epañoles.

Al principio del siglo 16 los Españoles pensaban retomar control del país y lo llamaron “Provincia de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, el Salvador del Mundo“, acortado luego como El Salvador.
