The Republic of Costa Rica is the oldest democratic government is Latin America. The country abolished its army in 1949. Because Costa Rica is located a few degrees away from the Equator, the climate is tropical. Although lacking the traditional 4 seasons of countries in more temperate zones, the year can be split into two seasons, the dry season and the rainy season. During this time it rains constantly in some regions, with an annual rainfall over 5,000 mm.
Costa Rica is home to 5% of the world biodiversity, even though the country has only about .25% of the World’s land mass. Around 25% of the country’s land is protected, making Costa Rica first nation in the Happy Planet Index as well as the greenest country around the world.
