Puerto Rico is an associated free state, an unincorporated territory of the United States, officially known as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is divided between political factions that favor statehood and those that want to keep its Commonwealth status. Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens and the U.S. regulates many aspects of Puerto Rico’s governance including national parks. However, Puerto Ricans cannot vote in U.S. presidential elections. English and Spanish are the official languages, with Spanish being the primary language.
Most of the population of Puerto Rico is of Spanish descent with some minorities of African and Euro-African descent. Most of the Island is made of uneven, hilly terrain and steep slopes. In addition to the main Island, the Puerto Rican territory includes smaller island including Vieques, Culebra, Mona and Desecheo.
