The Domenican Republic is one of the countries on the Hispaniola Island along with Haiti. This nation was traditionally a sugar producer, but now its economy is based on its services including telecommunications. Although the Domenican Republic has the second largest economy in the Caribbean, it is still plagued by social and economic problems including unemployment, corruption, and electric infrastructure issues.
Nevertheless, in the recent years the nation had developed into a reasonably free and democratic country.

Christopher Columbus reached the republic in 1492 and it became the first European settlement in the Americas. The settlement was located mainly in Santo Domingo, the country’s capital. The country became independent from Spain in 1821 but it was soon taken over by Haiti. In the following years, the country was subjected to several dictatorship and U.S. occupation from 1916 to 1924. After 1978, the Domenican Republic became a representative democracy.
