Caribbean

The 7,000 islands that make up the part of the world known as the Caribbean are, not surprisingly, found in the Caribbean Sea. This area is located north of South America, southeast of the United States and Mexico, and east of Central America. The area covers over 1 million square miles although only 92 thousand square miles are on land. The 30 million inhabitants are of Afro-Caribbean, Indo-Caribbean, European, Amerindian, and Asian descendent.

The area consists of 15 dependent territories and 14 sovereign states. Cuba has the largest GDP of any country in the area and Dominica has the smallest according to the CIA World Factbook.

There are many languages spoken in the Caribbean. The main languages are: Spanish, Dutch, English, and French. However, many Portuguese/Creole languages are spoken in Bonaire, Aruba, and Curaçao. Several indigenous or mixtures of indigenous and European based languages are spoken throughout the Caribbean as well.

The Caribbean is famous for their cuisine. As the Caribbean is surrounded by the sea, the majority of their dishes will contain some form of seafood. Tropical fruits such as plantains also play a large role in their food.
