This report presents detailed journalistic profiles of nine major photography special collections from academic, public and special libraries, government agencies and private enterprise. Collections profiled include the US Army Military History Institute, St. Andrews University (Scotland), the US National Archives and Records Administration, the San Francisco Public Library, Georgia State University, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, National Geographic, the University of California, Riverside and The International Center of Photography. The report is designed as a management tool.
The report probes digitization strategies, copyright issues, fundraising, preservation, exhibits, archiving, software, staffing, licensing and other issues of interest to managers of photography special collections in academia, public libraries, government and industry. The study helps photography collection managers and developers answer questions such as: how are collections best and most economically digitized? What is the best way to catalog collections so they can be found? What are collection managers doing to promote licensing of their collections? How are they handling fundraising?
