This report investigates the relationship between medical school faculties and their respective universities concerning patents, licenses, and other intellectual property. The study enables end users to define how much medical faculty personally earn from research grants and technology licensing, and covers their views on the effectiveness of their university technology transfer office. 141 universities are represented, from both the United States and abroad, covering a wide range of medical specialties. Extensive data is presented about faculty income, patent royalties, and technology transfer offices, accompanied by in-depth written opinions and attitudes provided by the survey participants.
Just a few of the report's many findings are that:
- On average, nearly 30% of a faculty member's remuneration is derived from research grants
- Only 10.29% of faculty have earned any income from patents, licenses, or other forms of intellectual property
- Faculty affiliated with private schools earn the most from these sources, with one faculty member having earned as much as $750,000 cumulatively
