U.S. Appliance Industry Statistical Review 2011PharmaLive Special ReportsJuly 1, 2011 11 Pages - SKU: ENPP6519098 |
| Countries covered: United States "The major appliance industry in the United States hit peak numbers of unit shipments in 2005 with some decreases occurring during 2006. Beginning in 2007, shipment numbers declined rapidly as the precursor events of the Great Recession materialized. The downward trend in U.S. shipments continued until late 2009 when the U.S. government initiated various stimulus programs to support economic growth. One such program offered a tax rebate to first-time home buyers. Another targeted energy-efficient appliances, including the U.S. Department of Energy's distribution of $300 million in federal funding to all 50 states as well as U.S. territories to support energy-efficiency initiatives. By the end of first-half 2010, the impact of various stimulus programs were being realized by the appliance sector, resulting in $1.3 billion in consumer spending. Most major appliances and HVAC shipments were up 3% or more compared to the first half of 2009. Refrigerator as well as gas-fired and oil-fired furnace shipments during first-half 2010 experienced increases of about 18% over the first half of 2009. In fact, microwaves ovens were the only segment to remain in negative territory, down 7.9%. Despite most stimulus programs expiring in the first half of 2010, energy efficiency remained top-of-mind of the consumer. In July 2010, a coalition that included appliance producers, industry associations, and environmental/ consumer advocacy groups cooperatively released the Energy Efficient and Smart Appliance Agreement of 2010. This agreement proposed several new appliance energy-efficiency standards and initiatives, including a 25% increase in U.S. minimum energy efficiency for new refrigerators. The global economic recovery has slowed during 2011. Many U.S. major appliance categories are showing year-on-year unit shipment decreases, however non-adjusted Electronics & Appliance Store sales for the first four months of 2011 were $31 billion, up slightly from the first four months of 2010. |
