| Countries covered: United States The appliance industry is seeing a slow-down in U.S. unit shipments that could make its modest growth expectations of 2-3% for 2011 tough to meet. The core group of major appliances (washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, ranges and ovens) was down 19.7% in April 2011 compared to April 2010. Refrigerators decreased the most, down 23.9%, while disposers increased the most, climbing 4.7%. In terms of HVAC shipments for March 2011, central air-conditioners were up 17% compared to March 2010. Shipment numbers for the first quarter of 2011 show that air-source heat pumps increased the most over first-quarter 2010, up 17%. The U.S. Census Bureau reported that adjusted Electronics & Appliance Store sales in April 2011 were $8.42 billion, down from $8.6 billion in March 2011. Adjusted Electronics & Appliance Store sales for April 2011 were up slightly from April 2010. The Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Components sector was one of 15 industry sectors to report growth in new orders for April. The appliance sector was one of 14 sectors that reported growth in production and one of 15 to report growth in employment. |
