| Small kitchen appliances represented one of the industry's leading growth segments in 2010. Solid sales growth was generated by blenders, drip coffeemakers, hand and stand mixers, electric grills, rise cookers, and waffle irons. Small kitchen appliance sales were better in 2010 than they were in 2007 before the global economic crisis, increasing 9% when measured by volume and 3% when measured by dollar sales. Sales of personal-care appliances were flat in 2010, with men's shavers and hair-care appliances generating some growth. Growth was also reported for humidifiers, heaters, vaporizers and robotic and workshop vacuum cleaners within the electric housewares category. After a solid 1Q 2011 performance, demand for appliances in major markets slowed down during 2Q 2011. Demand in the North American market decreased 10% after six months of growth. The European and Latin American markets for appliances improved slightly in 2Q 2011. |
