| Countries covered: United States Unit shipments for the core group of major appliances (washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, ranges and ovens) were down 2.8% in June 2011 compared to June 2010. Gas and electric dryers decreased the most, down 7.1%. Unit shipments for microwaves and freezers were up the most, each increasing over 12%. For year-to-date shipments, the core group of major appliances were down 5.1%. In terms of HVAC, shipment numbers show that central air-conditioners increased the most in the first five months of 2011, up 13%. Oil warm air furnaces decreased the most, down 8%. Economic activity in the overall manufacturing sector expanded in June for the 23rd consecutive month, and the overall economy grew for the 25th consecutive month. The Electrical Equipment, Appliance & Components manufacturing sector was one of 12 manufacturing sectors to generate growth in June 2011. Appliance supplier segments have seen a price increase in materials compared to previous months. Aluminum, copper, packaging materials, plastics, and steel were among those that had reported price increases in June. Nickel and stainless steel reported price declines. The consumer electronics industry is anticipated to grow 5.6% in 2011 to surpass $190 billion in revenue for the year, 2.1% more than the industry's January forecast. This growth rate will continue through 2012 to reach an all-time high of $197 billion. The industry's growth in 2011 will be aided by projected 157% growth in tablet computers, 45% growth in smartphone sales, and eReader unit sales doubling to produce $1.8 billion in revenue. |
