Every year at this time is year there are changes to the labor market data that can be very significant. This year, the level of payrolls over the past year was raised substantially. Historical data were not changed for population, labor force and other associated data from the houshold survey, but have been boosted very sharply in January. Both changes will carry forward in data for subsequent periods. These data changes do not change the big picture, of a labor market that is slowly but steadily healing. However, they can make understanding the labor market more difficult.
