This profile of the French manufacturer of handling machinery, Manitou, is the first to be published in the European Service of Off-Highway Research. Founded by the Braud family 60 years ago, Manitou, whose heart lies in Ancenis, France in the westerly département of Loire-Atlantique, has bases throughout the world. Its leadership in material handling comes from the success of its products, such as telescopic handlers, masted rough terrain and industrial lift trucks, aerial work-platforms, compact loaders and warehousing equipment.
The company makes more than two thirds of its turnover internationally and it spreads its interests into three varied sectors – construction, agriculture and industry. It designs machines, assembles them and acts as a distributor. It employs five brands, of which the best known are Manitou and Gehl. Its most famous products are the telescopic handlers, which are world leaders, accounting for a quarter of all global production.
